Why I’m Bullish on Yield Farming Ahead of the Eth 2.0 Launch

Hello everyone! I noticed that the hype around yield farming and DEX protocols kinda died down and that people focus more on NFTs and artwork-based projects like Rarible. I figured it would be great to (shortly) explain why yield farming lost its popularity and why they will have a comeback ahead of the new ETH 2.0 launch.
If you’re not new here, you know how the DeFi market evolved in the past months. We had a surge of yield farming (liquidity providing) platforms that were hyped at the very beginning but lost a majority of their users real fast, sometimes only days after launching.
I believe that most people were disappointed by this sort of mini speculative bubble and the fact that most projects had devs who rug pulled. Combined with the fact that Ethereum had high network congestion at several points in September and October, traders simply decided to prevent further losses and leave this niche place LP once and for all.
Don’t get me wrong, there are still plenty of yield farming projects that people use and it’s not like people stopped token swapping on Uniswap or anything. Ethereum also calmed down a lot now and the average transaction costs only like what, 80 gwei? But still, I think that people are pretty much aware that if another hype cycle started, the very same pattern would repeat again.
My take on this is that yield farming will regain its popularity in December around the time Ethereum 2.0 launches with its first phase and a lot of scaling solutions like Optimistic launch. If everything runs smoothly, we should have the building blocks for resuming the DeFi bull run and turning yield farming stable, rewarding, and popular once more.
Sure, Ethereum is only launching a small network upgrade that will run side-by-side with the original network, so we won’t see any technical changes anytime soon. But I really believe that ETH 2.0, along with other scaling solutions, will bring back trust and show that there is indeed a bright future for blockchain-based technology ahead of us. And in that future, Proof-of-Stake and liquidity providing will be the modern mining equivalent of running a Bitcoin farm in 2011.
One thing that I’m worried about is that enthusiasts, traders, and investors will still fall for the same projects that promise too much and deliver little. We saw numerous projects that were regarded as reputable in the beginning collapse within a week, like SushiSwap. But at the same time, my line of thinking is that projects that focus on development and spend minimal time on marketing will surface to the top in the end.
For example, while everyone was using Uniswap to swap tokens and provide liquidity, I was doing the same exact thing but cheaper on Anyswap. It is kinda funny since people boast that they earned $1200 through the UNI airdrop but I know for a fact that they spent way more on fees. And guess what? I didn’t even break a $100 threshold in the last three months while using Anyswap. I’m not trying to bash Uniswap here, but all I’m saying is that we already have scalable solutions now but people are too scared to introduce new changes in their lives.
I’m not here to market you anything. I just want to show you that even today, in October 2020, you can discover scalable and rewarding projects that simply work. Find any developer team that works all the time and doesn’t have the time to brag and you’ll know you’re on the right road! Last time I checked, the Anyswap team revealed that the average APY return for their yield farming pools ranges between 100% to 900%. When I asked my crypto friends if they know about this, I found that none of them even heard of Anyswap.

The player who died because I was eating mayonnaise in a random bush

Today in Tarkov, I shot someone in the face. He probably thought he was safe and to be fair, he probably should have been. I was in some bushes, in a meaningless part of a forest on Customs where no one should have been waiting. A low traffic area with no loot spots, a nice path through the map. The reason I was there is because I'm trying to speed level my metabolism at the moment to get Nutrition 3 in the hideout, to get Intel 2 to get the bitcoin farm. To speed level metabolism, I am drinking the hot mayonnaise, then rehydrating with water. I spawn in to raids with 4 jars of mayonnaise and 8 bottles of water.
Think about that poor bastards path to his death, because some bitcoin mining mayonnaise drinking weirdo was swilling a condiment in a bush, he got killed at close range in what is probably one of the safest parts of the map. I love this game sometimes.
Edit: I mayo killed another player. There was actual loot in this spot but it's a crappy place which is why some poor Lvl2 wandered in to find me swilling mayonnaise. He was so shocked that I didn't even interrupt the drinking, just finished, put it away, lifted my gun and shot him.
Anyway, I no longer need to be a mayo drinking weirdo but otherwise had a terrible night of raids.

Eth 2.0 vs Polkadot and other musings by a fundamental investor

Spent about two hours on this post and I decided it would help the community if I made it more visible. Comment was made as a response to this
I’m trying to avoid falling into a maximalist mindset over time. This isn’t a 100% ETH question, but I’m trying to stay educated about emerging tech.
Can someone help me see the downsides of diversifying into DOTs?
I know Polkadot is more centralized, VC backed, and generally against our ethos here. On chain governance might introduce some unknown risks. What else am I missing?
I see a bunch of posts about how Ethereum and Polkadot can thrive together, but are they not both L1 competitors?

The upsides.
Most of the guys responding to you here are full Eth maxis who drank the Parity is bad koolaid. They are married to their investment and basically emotional / tribal in an area where you should have a cool head. Sure, you might get more upvotes on Reddit if you do and say what the crowd wants, but do you want upvotes and fleeting validation or do you want returns on your investment? Do you want to be these guys or do you want to be the shareholder making bank off of those guys?
Disclaimer: I'm both an Eth whale and a Dot whale, and have been in crypto for close to a decade now. I originally bought ether sub $10 after researching it for at least a thousand hours. Rode to $1500 and down to $60. Iron hands - my intent has always been to reconsider my Eth position after proof of stake is out. I invested in the 2017 Dot public sale with the plan of flipping profits back to Eth but keeping Dots looks like the right short and long term play now. I am not a trader, I just take a deep tech dive every couple of years and invest in fundamentals.
Now as for your concerns:
I know Polkadot is more centralized
The sad truth is that the market doesn't really care about this. At all. There is no real statistic to show at what point a coin is "decentralized" or "too centralized". For example, bitcoin has been completely taken over by Chinese mining farms for about five years now. Last I checked, they control above 85% of the hashing power, they just spread it among different mining pools to make it look decentralized. They have had the ability to fake or block transactions for all this time but it has never been in their best interest to do so: messing with bitcoin in that way would crash its price, therefore their bitcoin holdings, their mining equipment, and their company stock (some of them worth billions) would evaporate. So they won't do it due to economics, but not because they can't.
That is the major point I want to get across; originally Bitcoin couldn't be messed with because it was decentralized, but now Bitcoin is centralized but it's still not messed with due to economics. It is basically ChinaCoin at this point, but the market doesn't care, and it still enjoys over 50% of the total crypto market cap.
So how does this relate to Polkadot? Well fortunately most chains - Ethereum included - are working towards proof of stake. This is obviously better for the environment, but it also has a massive benefit for token holders. If a hostile party wanted to take over a proof of stake chain they'd have to buy up a massive share of the network. The moment they force through a malicious transaction a proof of stake blockchain has the option to fork them off. It would be messy for a few days, but by the end of the week the hostile party would have a large amount of now worthless tokens, and the proof of stake community would have moved on to a version of the blockchain where the hostile party's tokens have been slashed to zero. So not only does the market not care about centralization (Bitcoin example), but proof of stake makes token holders even safer.
That being said, Polkadot's "centralization" is not that far off to Ethereum. The Web3 foundation kept 30% of the Dots while the Ethereum Foundation kept 17%. There are whales in Polkadot but Ethereum has them too - 40% of all genesis Ether went to 100 wallets, and many suspect that the original Ethereum ICO was sybiled to make it look more popular and decentralized than it really was. But you don't really care about that do you? Neither do I. Whales are a fact of life.
VC backed
VCs are part of the crypto game now. There is no way to get rid of them, and there is no real reason why you should want to get rid of them. They put their capital at risk (same as you and me) and seek returns on their investment (same as you and me). They are both in Polkadot and Ethereum, and have been for years now. I have no issue with them as long as they don't play around with insider information, but that is another topic. To be honest, I would be worried if VCs did not endorse chains I'm researching, but maybe that's because my investing style isn't chasing hype and buying SUSHI style tokens from anonymous (at the time) developers. That's just playing hot potato. But hey, some people are good at that.
As to the amount of wallets that participated in the Polkadot ICO: a little known fact is that more individual wallets participated in Polkadot's ICO than Ethereum's, even though Polkadot never marketed their ICO rounds due to regulatory reasons.

Some guy that works(ed?) at Parity (who employs what, 200+ people?) correctly said that Ethereum is losing its tech lead and that offended the Ethereum hivemind. Oh no. So controversial. I'm so personally hurt by that.
Some guy that has been working for free on Ethereum basically forever correctly said that Polkadot is taking the blockchain tech crown. Do we A) Reflect on why he said that? or B) Rally the mob to chase him off?
"I did not quit social media, I quit Ethereum. I did not go dark, I just left the community. I am no longer coordinating hard forks, building testnets, or contributing otherwise. I did not work on Polkadot, I never did, I worked on Ethereum. I did not hate Ethereum, I loved it."
Also Parity locked their funds (and about 500+ other wallets not owned by them) and proposed a solution to recover them. When the community voted no they backed off and did not fork the chain, even if they had the influence to do so. For some reason this subreddit hates them for that, even if Parity did the 100% moral thing to do. Remember, 500+ other teams or people had their funds locked, so Parity was morally bound to try its best to recover them.
Its just lame drama to be honest. Nothing to do with ethos, everything to do with emotional tribalism.
Now for the missing upsides (I'll also respond to random fragments scattered in the thread):

A good quick intro to Eth's tech vs Polkadot's tech can be found on this thread, especially this reply. That thread is basically mandatory reading if you care about your investment.
Eth 2.0's features will not really kick in for end users until about 2023. That means every dapp (except DeFI, where the fees make sense due to returns and is leading the fee market) who built on Eth's layer 1 are dead for three years. Remember the trading card games... Gods Unchained? How many players do you think are going to buy and sell cards when the transaction fee is worth more than the cards? All that development is now practically worthless until it can migrate to its own shard. This story repeats for hundreds of other dapp teams who's projects are now priced out for three years. So now they either have to migrate to a one of the many unpopulated L2 options (which have their own list of problems and risks, but that's another topic) or they look for another platform, preferably one interoperable with Ethereum. Hence Polkadot's massive growth in developer activity. If you check out https://polkaproject.com/ you'll see 205 projects listed at the time of this post. About a week ago they had 202 listed. That means about one team migrated from another tech stack to build on Polkadot every two days, and trust me, many more will come in when parachains are finally activated, and it will be a complete no brainer when Polkadot 2.0 is released.
Another huge upside for Polkadot is the Initial Parachain Offerings. Polkadot's version of ICOs. The biggest difference is that you can vote for parachains using your Dots to bind them to the relay chain, and you get some of the parachain's tokens in exchange. After a certain amount of time you get your Dots back. The tokenomics here are impressive: Dots are locked (reduced supply) instead of sold (sell pressure) and you still earn your staking rewards. There's no risk of scammers running away with your Ether and the governance mechanism allows for the community to defund incompetent devs who did not deliver what was promised.
Wouldn’t an ETH shard on Polkadot gain a bunch of scaling benefits that we won’t see natively for a couple years?
Yes. That is correct. Both Edgeware and Moonbeam are EVM compatible. And if the original dapp teams don't migrate their projects someone else will fork them, exactly like SUSHI did to Uniswap, and how Acala is doing to MakerDao.
Although realistically Ethereum has a 5 yr headstart and devs haven't slowed down at all
Ethereum had a five year head start but it turns out that Polkadot has a three year tech lead.
Just because it's "EVM Compatible" doesn't mean you can just plug Ethereum into Polkadot or vica versa, it just means they both understand Ethereum bytecode and you can potentially copy/paste contracts from Ethereum to Polkadot, but you'd still need to add a "bridge" between the 2 chains, so it adds additional complexity and extra steps compared to using any of the existing L2 scaling solutions
That only applies of you are thinking from an Eth maximalist perspective. But if you think from Polkadot's side, why would you need to use the bridge back to Ethereum at all? Everything will be seamless, cheaper, and quicker once the ecosystem starts to flourish.

They are competitors. Both have their strategies, and both have their strengths (tech vs time on the market) but they are clearly competing in my eyes. Which is a good thing, Apple and Samsung competing in the cell phone market just leads to more innovation for consumers. You can still invest in both if you like.

Bitcoin "monetary policy" = guaranteed failure

I often see Bitcoin users tricking new people into thinking that Bitcoin is a store of value because of it's monitory policy (only a certain number of coins will ever exist). This is a scam because this hard cap is the reason why Bitcoin is guaranteed to fail.
We currently have a $29 per transaction subsidy due to block rewards.
~900 BTC mined per day. ~337,000 transactions per day. ~0.0026706231454BTC ($29) subsidy per transaction
What happens when transaction fees are no longer subsidized by block rewards? In order to maintain our current level of network security, users must pay an extra $29 per transaction (assuming BTC price is $11,000 and TPS is 3.9).
Scenario 1
99.999% of the world stops using BTC because they can't afford to pay an extra $29 per transaction.
Scenario2
most people stop making on-chain transactions, only transacting on L2. This forces small miners to leave (only leaving huge super efficient mining farms), significantly decreasing network security and increasing centralization. Eventually the only people mining BTC will be those who have literal free electricity (power plant owners, governments etc).

Personal experience
Hindi ko na-discover to actually. May nag-suggest lang sa akin sa Coinpot na subreddit.
For the first few days, nagtsaga lang ako sa faucets ng Coinstake. Then, I also spent time on other faucet sites and app. Nag-farm ako ng Dogecoins. Nung naka-ipon na, nag-transfer ako sa Bololex.com. 2 Altcoins ang available sa Bololex - Tokemon (TKM) and Ratcoins (RAT). So, inexchange ko lahat ng Dogecoins ko evenly to Tokemon and Ratcoinsm then inkagay ko sa Coinstake. Siguro nakabili ako ng mga 600,000 na Tokemon, and mga 1,000,000 ng Ratcoin.
Ayun, so naghintay lang ako ng 2 days, habang nagcocollect ako sa faucet. Ang TKM ko ay naging 640,000 and RAT ko naman is naging 1,070,000! Not bad for not doing anything. Sit back and relax ako, and may kita ako. Wow!
So now I invested P400 lang, and just after 4 days I manage to get approximately 0.00121647 BTC (Sa coinstake kasi, on the upper right corner, it shows an estimates value in BTC). In today value, 784.89 pesos po sya.

Recommendations on how to cash out
Sobrang laki ng transaction fee pag nag cashout ka using BTC. Kung magca-cashout kayo, here's what I recommend.
  1. Convert nyo lahat ng Altcoins nyo into other altcoins. I recommend any of the following: Litecoin, Dogecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum.

Possible attack vector?

The difficult adjustment happens every 2016 Blocks. What would happen if most of the hashing Power would for whatever reason vanish. Wouldn't bitcoin become unusable for a such a period of time that most of the users would face away from bitcoin?
This vector Wouldn't be unique to bitcoin but i wonder if there is some kind of emergency adjustment of the difficulty when there is more time between two Blocks than lets say 2 or 4 weeks.
When China for example pushes the hashing Power to some New Limits and then shut down all mining farms?

Why I support BSV and conspiration bonus

It's simple. You don't need a fees market for Bitcoin to be profitable for mining. Bitcoin is still in its infancy. The fee market will be great once the bitcoin's reward/block found is going to be too low. In my opinion, the only reason of the fees market so early on was to attack Bitcoin.
It was to discourage the world and to make Bitcoin obsolete vs credit cards. The threat of a split from the big blockers was not really a threat because BTC would always remain more profitable thanks to the fee market.
Another way to keep Bitcoin from scaling was with social media manipulation. You can see the result and how these people have done it on the most popular forums in the community. Thx to censorship.
So what was the real reason for not expanding the blocksize limit? Was it to sell us a false promise with LN which would be a big hit in 18 months, or was it to make Bitcoin like gold so then it's not p2p money anymore which goes against white paper? Or was it to prevent flood spam, or was it to improve the decentralization of mining because raising the blocksize limit will be hard to be profitable if you are not big enough? Satoshi already said that he see miners as a huge server farm. Or maybe it was to sabotage Bitcoin?
So because of these reasons, Amaury created the ABC software to change codes to raise the blocksize limit. He had the support from all the big blocks supporter. Finally, Bitcoin forked because Amaury and big blockers wanted a higher block size limit to make p2p money transactions faster and cheaper. The end result is that Bitcoin ABC from Amaury ended up as the loser with the chain with the least proof of work, the minority chain. Bitcoin Cash was created.
Once Bitcoin Cash was created, everything was fine until some realized that the protocol was not stable. Amaury from ABC has always acted like a dictator and he's always right, he can change the protocol code as he sees fit. On the other hand, it is thanks to people like him that Bitcoin Cash exists after all. Several ABC supporters did not like the idea of ​​a hardfork every 6 months. It was written in the sky that Bitcoin Cash would be easy to attack. It was obvious that malicious people would find it easy to attack the chain.
It is somewhat for this reason that CSW created Bitcoin Satoshi Vision. This was to ensure that the Bitcoin protocol was set in stone and also to delete the blocksize limit so that there would never be a fight over it again. Bitcoin BSV is exactly as Bitcoin is described in the white paper. It is now impossible to split BSV, it's now untouchable.
With the drama that is going on with ABC and BCHN now, this is not something that surprises BSV supporters. It was written in the sky that there would be another chicane and that another split was inevitable.
It is for these reasons that I chose BSV. I'm glad I made the right choice.
I'm not saying I'm right either. If you trust a certain conspiracy, everything is orchestrated by bad bankers who want the destruction of p2p money. How? Make Bitcoin obsolete by creating a problem by limiting the blocksize to a low value to make transactions expensive and slow. It was enough to split to divide the community. But that wasn't enough. Split the community a second time by creating other problems and why not a third time(ABC vs BCHN) by creating more and more problems.
If this version is true then you might as well throw in the towel because Bitcoin is definitely a failed experiment. They clearly won.

Scav Times(When to Scav on What Maps)

So I've posted here before about how I have a Scav with quite a few high leveled abilities to include Max endurance. I'd like to help those that don't really know or just want more info on Scav Raids. This is just my observations and in no way absolute. All Scav spawn times are averages and based off personal experience.
So you want to Scav in but have no idea where to go? Well it's all about what time of day(irl) and what day it is.
Customs (Spawn between 40 to 25 minutes left in raid)- this map is almost always busy no matter when you scav in but the gear you find can fluctuate on the day of the week. Weekends and nights you'll find a lot more dedicated/chaded folks while during the weekdays during the day you'll find a lot more low levels or rather... Bad players.
Shoreline (spawn between 40 to 35 mins left in raid)- This map is a gold mine for scavs..no matter when. But the gold could be different. Night time (irl again) and weekends you'll roll up on resort and find many bodies(mostly east wing) with good gear just left or find insurance fraud. Weekdays it's a wasteland but that means most caches are unhit.
Interchange (spawn time sub 20 minutes all the way to 10 minutes left) -Scav on interchange and its a race against time. Most battles are done and bodies lay cold. If power has been hit then go to the better known battle spots of kiba or techlight. If no power watch out for Killa. It seems that 7/10 times if power hasn't been thrown Killa still lives. Best times I find to go in for good loot is actually early morning to about noon time on most days. Again the hardcore weekend warriors will always go there but your pickings won't be as good as they'll be teaming more.
Woods (spawn time 40- 30 minutes)- I only ever go to woods if I have a sniper scav. There usually isn't any good loot but often times I find that the middle cabin (with the safe) is not looted. This one is a bit more miss then hit almost everyday.
Reserve(spawn time is 40 -30 minutes)-If you can get past the queue time for reserve it's really not that great. Unless you go as a group be prepared to meet opposition from fellow player scavs and pmc and raiders. This place is always busy and honestly if you're looking to just get gear and get out find a hiding spot and some juice and wait.
Again all of this is based off personal experience from running hundreds of scav runs. I've come out of most raids with gear for my next PmC run quite often and you will be surprised about what places don't get looted. As you can tell most maps are the busiest at night and weekends but if you can scav during the weekdays you'll find the best loot just laying there. I got my Bitcoin farm started from gpu my scav found. Be careful out there and remember take that damn Kolpak off!

Don't blindly follow a narrative, its bad for you and its bad for crypto in general

I mostly lurk around here but I see a pattern repeating over and over again here and in multiple communities so I have to post. I'm just posting this here because I appreciate the fact that this sub is a place of free speech and maybe something productive can come out from this post, while bitcoin is just fucking censorship, memes and moon/lambo posts. If you don't agree, write in the comments why, instead of downvoting. You don't have to upvote either, but when you downvote you are killing the opportunity to have discussion. If you downvote or comment that I'm wrong without providing any counterpoints you are no better than the BTC maxis you despise.
In various communities I see a narrative being used to bring people in and making them follow something without thinking for themselves. In crypto I see this mostly in BTC vs BCH tribalistic arguments:
- BTC community: "Everything that is not BTC is shitcoin." or more recently as stated by adam on twitter, "Everything that is not BTC is a ponzi scheme, even ETH.", "what is ETH supply?", and even that they are doing this for "altruistic" reasons, to "protect" the newcomers. Very convenient for them that they are protecting the newcomers by having them buy their bags
- BCH community: "BTC maxis are dumb", "just increase block size and you will have truly p2p electronic cash", "It is just that simple, there are no trade offs", "if you don't agree with me you are a BTC maxi", "BCH is satoshi's vision for p2p electronic cash"
It is not exclusive to crypto but also politics, and you see this over and over again on twitter and on reddit.
My point is, that narratives are created so people don't have to think, they just choose a narrative that is easy to follow and makes sense for them, and stick with it. And people keep repeating these narratives to bring other people in, maybe by ignorance, because they truly believe it without questioning, or maybe by self interest, because they want to shill you their bags.
Because this is BCH community, and because bitcoin is censored, so I can't post there about the problems in the BTC narrative (some of which are IMO correctly identified by BCH community), I will stick with the narrative I see in the BCH community.
The culprit of this post was firstly this post by user u/scotty321 "The BTC Paradox: “A 1 MB blocksize enables poor people to run their own node!” “Okay, then what?” “Poor people won’t be able to use the network!”". You will see many posts of this kind being made by u/Egon_1 also. Then you have also this comment in that thread by u/fuck_____________1 saying that people that want to run their own nodes are retarded and that there is no reason to want to do that. "Just trust block explorer websites". And the post and comment were highly upvoted. Really? You really think that there is no problem in having just a few nodes on the network? And that the only thing that secures the network are miners?
As stated by user u/co1nsurf3r in that thread:
While I don't think that everybody needs to run a node, a full node does publish blocks it considers valid to other nodes. This does not amount to much if you only consider a single node in the network, but many "honest" full nodes in the network will reduce the probability of a valid block being withheld from the network by a collusion of "hostile" node operators.
But surely this will not get attention here, and will be downvoted by those people that promote the narrative that there is no trade off in increasing the blocksize and the people that don't see it are retarded or are btc maxis.
The only narrative I stick to and have been for many years now is that cryptocurrency takes power from the government and gives power to the individual, so you are not restricted to your economy as you can participate in the global economy. There is also the narrative of banking the bankless, which I hope will come true, but it is not a use case we are seeing right now.
Some people would argue that removing power from gov's is a bad thing, but you can't deny the fact that gov's can't control crypto (at least we would want them not to).
But, if you really want the individuals to remain in control of their money and transact with anyone in the world, the network needs to be very resistant to any kind of attacks. How can you have p2p electronic cash if your network just has a handful couple of nodes and the chinese gov can locate them and just block communication to them? I'm not saying that this is BCH case, I'm just refuting the fact that there is no value in running your own node. If you are relying on block explorers, the gov can just block the communication to the block explorer websites. Then what? Who will you trust to get chain information? The nodes needs to be decentralized so if you take one node down, many more can appear so it is hard to censor and you don't have few points of failure.
Right now BTC is focusing on that use case of being difficult to censor. But with that comes the problem that is very expensive to transact on the network, which breaks the purpose of anyone being able to participate. Obviously I do think that is also a major problem, and lightning network is awful right now and probably still years away of being usable, if it ever will. The best solution is up for debate, but thinking that you just have to increase the blocksize and there is no trade off is just naive or misleading. BCH is doing a good thing in trying to come with a solution that is inclusive and promotes cheap and fast transactions, but also don't forget centralization is a major concern and nothing to just shrug off.
Saying that "a 1 MB blocksize enables poor people to run their own" and that because of that "Poor people won’t be able to use the network" is a misrepresentation designed to promote a narrative. Because 1MB is not to allow "poor" people to run their node, it is to facilitate as many people to run a node to promote decentralization and avoid censorship.
Also an elephant in the room that you will not see being discussed in either BTC or BCH communities is that mining pools are heavily centralized. And I'm not talking about miners being mostly in china, but also that big pools control a lot of hashing power both in BTC and BCH, and that is terrible for the purpose of crypto.
Other projects are trying to solve that. Will they be successful? I don't know, I hope so, because I don't buy into any narrative. There are many challenges and I want to see crypto succeed as a whole. As always guys, DYOR and always question if you are not blindly following a narrative. I'm sure I will be called BTC maxi but maybe some people will find value in this. Don't trust guys that are always posting silly "gocha's" against the other "tribe".
EDIT: User u/ShadowOfHarbringer has pointed me to some threads that this has been discussed in the past and I will just put my take on them here for visibility, as I will be using this thread as a reference in future discussions I engage:
When there was only 2 nodes in the network, adding a third node increased redundancy and resiliency of the network as a whole in a significant way. When there is thousands of nodes in the network, adding yet another node only marginally increase the redundancy and resiliency of the network. So the question then becomes a matter of personal judgement of how much that added redundancy and resiliency is worth. For the absolutist, it is absolutely worth it and everyone on this planet should do their part.
What is the magical number of nodes that makes it counterproductive to add new nodes? Did he do any math? Does BCH achieve this holy grail safe number of nodes? Guess what, nobody knows at what number of nodes is starts to be marginally irrelevant to add new nodes. Even BTC today could still not have enough nodes to be safe. If you can't know for sure that you are safe, it is better to try to be safer than sorry. Thousands of nodes is still not enough, as I said, it is much cheaper to run a full node as it is to mine. If it costs millions in hash power to do a 51% attack on the block generation it means nothing if it costs less than $10k to run more nodes than there are in total in the network and cause havoc and slowing people from using the network. Or using bot farms to DDoS the 1000s of nodes in the network. Not all attacks are monetarily motivated. When you have governments with billions of dollars at their disposal and something that could threat their power they could do anything they could to stop people from using it, and the cheapest it is to do so the better
You should run a full node if you're a big business with e.g. >$100k/month in volume, or if you run a service that requires high fraud resistance and validation certainty for payments sent your way (e.g. an exchange). For most other users of Bitcoin, there's no good reason to run a full node unless you reel like it.
Shouldn't individuals benefit from fraud resistance too? Why just businesses?
Personally, I think it's a good idea to make sure that people can easily run a full node because they feel like it, and that it's desirable to keep full node resource requirements reasonable for an enthusiast/hobbyist whenever possible. This might seem to be at odds with the concept of making a worldwide digital cash system in which all transactions are validated by everybody, but after having done the math and some of the code myself, I believe that we should be able to have our cake and eat it too.

The biggest reason individuals may want to run their own node is to increase their privacy. SPV wallets rely on others (nodes or ElectronX servers) who may learn their addresses.

Another "it is all or nothing argument" and quoting satoshi to try and prove their point. Just because every user doesn't need to be also a full node doesn't mean that there aren't serious risks for having few nodes
For this to have any importance in practice, all of the miners, all of the exchanges, all of the explorers and all of the economic nodes should go rogue all at once. Collude to change consensus. If you have a node you can detect this. It doesn't do much, because such a scenario is impossible in practice.

Non-mining nodes don't contribute to adding data to the blockchain ledger, but they do play a part in propagating transactions that aren't yet in blocks (the mempool). Bitcoin client implementations can have different validations for transactions they see outside of blocks and transactions they see inside of blocks; this allows for "soft forks" to add new types of transactions without completely breaking older clients (while a transaction is in the mempool, a node receiving a transaction that's a new/unknown type could drop it as not a valid transaction (not propagate it to its peers), but if that same transaction ends up in a block and that node receives the block, they accept the block (and the transaction in it) as valid (and therefore don't get left behind on the blockchain and become a fork). The participation in the mempool is a sort of "herd immunity" protection for the network, and it was a key talking point for the "User Activated Soft Fork" (UASF) around the time the Segregated Witness feature was trying to be added in. If a certain percentage of nodes updated their software to not propagate certain types of transactions (or not communicate with certain types of nodes), then they can control what gets into a block (someone wanting to get that sort of transaction into a block would need to communicate directly to a mining node, or communicate only through nodes that weren't blocking that sort of transaction) if a certain threshold of nodes adheres to those same validation rules. It's less specific than the influence on the blockchain data that mining nodes have, but it's definitely not nothing.

The addition of non-mining nodes does not add to the efficiency of the network, but actually takes away from it because of the latency issue.

It is true that if you destroy mining nodes you take down the network from producing new blocks (temporarily), even if you have a lot of non mining nodes. But, it still better than if you take down the mining nodes who are also the only full nodes. If the miners are not the only full nodes, at least you still have full nodes with the blockchain data so new miners can download it and join. If all the miners are also the full nodes and you take them down, where will you get all the past blockchain data to start mining again? Just pray that the miners that were taken down come back online at some point in the future?
The real limiting factor is ISP's: Imagine a situation where one service provider defrauds 4000 different nodes. Did the excessive amount of nodes help at all, when they have all been defrauded by the same service provider? If there are only 30 ISP's in the world, how many nodes do we REALLY need?
You cant defraud if the connection is encrypted. Use TOR for example, it is hard for ISP's to know what you are doing.
Satoshi specifically said in the white paper that after a certain point, number of nodes needed plateaus, meaning after a certain point, adding more nodes is actually counterintuitive, which we also demonstrated. (the latency issue). So, we have adequately demonstrated why running non-mining nodes does not add additional value or security to the network.

There's also the matter of economically significant nodes and the role they play in consensus. Sure, nobody cares about your average joe's "full node" where he is "keeping his own ledger to keep the miners honest", as it has no significance to the economy and the miners couldn't give a damn about it. However, if say some major exchanges got together to protest a miner activated fork, they would have some protest power against that fork because many people use their service. Of course, there still needs to be miners running on said "protest fork" to keep the chain running, but miners do follow the money and if they got caught mining a fork that none of the major exchanges were trading, they could be coaxed over to said "protest fork".
In consensus, what matters about nodes is only the number, economical power of the node doesn't mean nothing, the protocol doesn't see the net worth of the individual or organization running that node.
Running a full node that is not mining and not involved is spending or receiving payments is of very little use. It helps to make sure network traffic is broadcast, and is another copy of the blockchain, but that is all (and is probably not needed in a healthy coin with many other nodes)
He gets it right (broadcasting transaction and keeping a copy of the blockchain) but he dismisses the importance of it

The next XVG? Microcap 100x potential actually supported by fundamentals!

What’s up team? I have a hot one for you. XVG returned 12 million percent in 2017 and this one reminds me a lot of it. Here’s why:
Mimblewimble is like Blu-Ray compared to CD-ROM in terms of its ability to compress data on a blockchain. The current BTC chain is 277gb and its capacity is limited because every time you spend a coin, each node needs to validate its history back to when it was mined (this is how double spending is prevented). Mimblewimble is different - all transactions in a block are aggregated and netted out in one giant CoinJoin, and only the current spending needs to be verified. This means that dramatically more transactions can fit into a smaller space, increasing throughput and lowering fees while still retaining the full proof of work game theory of Bitcoin. These blockchains are small enough to run a full node on a cheap smartphone, which enhances the decentralization and censorship resistance of the network.
The biggest benefit, though, is that all transactions are private - the blockchain doesn’t reveal amounts or addresses except to the actual wallet owner. Unlike earlier decoy-based approaches that bloat the chain and can still be data mined (XMR), Mimblewimble leaves no trace in the blockchain, instead storing only the present state of coin ownership.
The first two Mimblewimble coins, Grin and Beam, launched to great fanfare in 2019, quickly reaching over $100m in market cap (since settled down to $22m and $26m respectively). They are good projects but grin has infinite supply and huge never-decreasing emission, and Beam is a corporate moneygrab whose founding investors are counting on you buying for their ROI.
ZEC is valued at $568m today, despite the facts that only 1% of transactions are actually shielded, it has a trusted setup, and generating a confidential transaction takes ~60 seconds on a powerful PC. XMR is a great project but it’s valued at $1.2b (so no 100x) and it uses CryptoNote, which is 2014 tech that relies on a decoy-based approach that could be vulnerable to more powerful computers in the future. Mimblewimble is just a better way to approach privacy because there is simply no data recorded in the blockchain for companies to surveil.
Privacy is not just for darknet markets, porn, money launderers and terrorists. In many countries it’s dangerous to be wealthy, and there are all kinds of problems with having your spending data be out there publicly and permanently for all to see. Namely, companies like Amazon are patenting approaches to identify people with their crypto addresses, “for law enforcement” but also so that, just like credit cards, your spending data can be used to target ads. (A) Coinbase is selling user data to the DEA, IRS, FBI, Secret Service, and who knows who else? (B) What about insurance companies raising your premiums or canceling your policy because they see you buying (legal) cannabis? If your business operates using transparent cryptocurrency, competitors can data mine your customer and supply chain data, and employees can see how much everyone else gets paid. I could go on, but the idea of “I have nothing to hide, so what do I care about privacy?” will increasingly ring hollow as people realize that this money printing will have to be paid by massive tax increases AND that those taxes will be directly debited from their “Central Bank Digital Currency” wallets.
100% privacy for all transactions also eliminates one HUGE problem that people aren’t aware of yet, but they will be: fungibility. Fungibility means that each coin is indistinguishable from any other, just like paper cash. Why is this important? Because of the ever-expanding reach of AML/KYC/KYT (Anti-Money Laundering / Know Your Customer / Know Your Transaction) as regulators cramp down on crypto and banks take over, increasingly coins become “tainted” in various ways. For example, if you withdraw coins to a mixing service like Wasabi or Samourai, you may find your account blocked. (C) The next obvious step is that if you receive coins that these chainalysis services don’t like for whatever reason, you will be completely innocent yet forced to prove that you didn’t know that the coins you bought were up to no good in a past life. 3 days ago, $100k of USDC was frozen. (D) Even smaller coins like LTC now have this problem, because “Chinese Drug Kingpins” used them. (E) I believe that censorable money that can be blocked/frozen isn’t really “your money”.
Epic Cash is a 100% volunteer community project (like XVG and XMR) that had a fair launch in September last year with no ICO and no premine. There are very few projects like this, and it’s a key ingredient in Verge’s success (still at $110m market cap today despite being down 97% since the bubble peak) and why it’s still around. It has a small but super passionate community of “Freemen” who are united by a belief in the sound money economics of Bitcoin Standard emission (21m supply limit and ever-decreasing inflation) and the importance of privacy.
I am super bullish on this coin for the following reasons:
Because it doesn’t have a huge marketing budget in a sea of VC-funded shitcoins, it is as-yet undiscovered, which is why it’s so cheap. There are only 4 Mimblewimble-based currencies on the market: MWC at $162m, BEAM at $26m, GRIN at $22m, and EPIC at $0.4m. This is not financial advice and as always, do your own research, but I’ve been buying this gem for months and will continue to.
This one ticks all the boxes for me, the only real problem is that it’s hard to buy much without causing a huge green candle. Alt season is coming, and coins like this are how your neighbor Chad got his Lambo back in 2017. For 2021, McLaren is a better choice and be sure to pay cash so that it doesn’t get repossessed like Chad!

Bitcoin enthusiast curious about its limitations and potential solutions.

I'm a big fan of Bitcoin, mainly because I love the concept of a store of value that isn't controlled by governments or banks. I feel like this is vital for some people today (such as those living in countries with poor economies, like Venezuela and Turkey, and those living under corrupt governments who are at risk of having their funds frozen for speaking out against their government). Even though for many of us here it may be no more than a speculative investment, I believe it could well be necessary for more and more of us at some point in the future. I see an increasing amount of regular people being drawn to it as a hedge against inflation, especially with all the recent money printing going on and the devaluation of the dollar.
Like anything, I'm aware that Bitcoin has its limitations. Two of those which I see mentioned regularly and concern me are:
  1. Scaling: Is Bitcoin able to scale as more and more people use it? Can it handle being adopted on a global scale by millions, or even billions of people? If not, what are the solutions to this (I've heard of lightning, and see it being criticised a lot. Feel free to highlight why this is or isn't a good solution).
  2. Centralisation: I'm aware that most of the mining farms (is that even the right term?) are in China. Is this a big problem? Why, or why not? Let's say in a hypothetical situation where these were forcibly shut down, what would that mean for Bitcoin?
For the record, I don't have a great understanding of the more technical side of crypto. In fact that's why I chose my username as crypto grandma. So, forgive my questions if they are naive or ill informed. I appreciate anyone who can ELIG (explain like I'm your grandma) why these concerns (and any others that may be relevant) are or are not important, and what the potential solutions can be. Thanks!

Is Convergence the Future of DeFi? InfinityDefi Tells Who Will Dominate the Field

After more than two years of brewing, DeFi broke out in the summer of 2020. Within just three months from mid-June till present, the progress is dazzling. This is by far the most innovative stage in the cryptocurrency history. Liquidity mining and yield farming are extremely popular and the Ethereum gas fee skyrocketed on their backs. Meanwhile, some projects are forced to close due to the overly costly transaction fees they need to subsidize for users. What did classic DeFi projects do in the past six months?
Liquidity mining has been a recognized driver for DeFi. The model was originated by Synthetix on Curve to distribute SNX token incentives to users who provide liquidity for the sUSD pool. Synthetix is a synthetic asset generation and trading protocol, therefore, with no liquidity its synthetic assets are meaningless.
What is liquidity mining? It is depositing or lending tokens under a set of rules to a DeFi product with a mining mechanism to ensure liquidity for the product’s fund pool with the final aim to get rewards for it. The recently popular Compound does it. Compound is a DeFi protocol for collateralized lending on Ethereum. Users provide their tokens to get annualized income or pay interest to borrow tokens. While borrowing and lending, they earn the governance token COMP distributed by a smart contract.
Their token COMP serves for governance and reflects the business value. All borrowers and lenders on Compound earn COMP. The total number of tokens allocated for mining is 4,229,949. Lenders get one half and borrowers get the other half of it. When COMP price rises, the users’ motivation to deposit and borrow money is stronger.
YAM is the initiator of mining + forking. When AMPL came out, there were some imitators but none of them gained mass attention in the crypto community. The only exception is YAM. Sushiswap pushes forking + mining. It is a fork of Uniswap with increased token distribution for mining that tried to pull the liquidity carpet from under Uniswap. It has mining pools for stablecoins like USDT, USDC, and DAI as well as Uniswap’s most liquid mainstream DeFi token pools. However, Sushiswap imitators lack originality. Various “food swaps” that appeared recently are bound to enter the death spiral.
Need aggregators? InfinityDefi (INFI) Is What You Need
In the Internet age, aggregators get the most value. Google aggregates the content of websites, Facebook does it with social relationships and content, Amazon with goods and trading, Airbnb with guest rooms, etc. These tech giants have subverted traditional industries and built a near-monopoly position.
Why are they close to monopoly? As more users, content, and products are aggregated, the cost drops and a network effect forms. The wall is high, but the one who crosses it takes all. The same is true for DeFi. It is just a technology on top of a financial arbitrage model, which is cyclic depositing and borrowing to earn interest.
DeFi is modular and trustless and aggregators take advantage of it. Liquidity mining, staking, lending, or DEX AMM are all essentially deposition of tokens to a storage pool to earn revenue. INFI (InfinityDefi) is an aggregate DeFi product, a decentralized digital bank as they call themselves. They are adding a vault with the best investment and value preservation services.

Is Convergence the Future of DeFi? InfinityDefi Tells Who Will Dominate the Field

After more than two years of brewing, DeFi broke out in the summer of 2020. Within just three months from mid-June till present, the progress is dazzling. This is by far the most innovative stage in the cryptocurrency history. Liquidity mining and yield farming are extremely popular and the Ethereum gas fee skyrocketed on their backs. Meanwhile, some projects are forced to close due to the overly costly transaction fees they need to subsidize for users. What did classic DeFi projects do in the past six months?

While borrowing and lending, they earn the governance token COMP distributed by a smart contract.
Their token COMP serves for governance and reflects the business value. All borrowers and lenders on Compound earn COMP. The total number of tokens allocated for mining is 4,229,949. Lenders get one half and borrowers get the other half of it. When COMP price rises, the users’ motivation to deposit and borrow money is stronger.
YAM is the initiator of mining + forking. When AMPL came out, there were some imitators but none of them gained mass attention in the crypto community. The only exception is YAM. Explaining in a Marxist sense what Cryptocurrency is.

I think that a stateless currency isn't a bad idea, but these cryptocurrencies seem to be investment/confidence scams that blew up enough to be a viable currency. It is a peer-to-peer currency that is sourced from processing power from a computer, you "get" cryptocurrency by "mining" for it with your computer which happens through your PC solving equations at a rapid rate, the higher the processing power, the faster the equation solving and the faster you solve equations, the more currency you can obtain. Essentially, bitcoin mining uses a great deal of energy, which is also another reason to reject it.
Marxist view of money is that it is the unity of exchange and use-value; crypto is popular enough to be exchanged for goods, so again, it's gone from confidence scam to viable currency. This often contrasts with Marxist theory, as one is almost encouraged to hoard so that one can obtain maximum currency. It also fails to address inequality, since someone with a Home PC will be making no money—someone in the private sector can rent out a server farm and make 10000x more than you in a fraction of the time.
Now, in Marxist terms, the 'value' of a given cryptocurrency is the average socially necessary labor time, SNLT, needed to mine a coin—in this case, the processing power and time a computer must run. However, a crypto's 'value' in this sense must contain an element of social necessity. People must need a commodity for it to have any value—the value itself being based on the necessary labor time to produce it. Cryptocurrencies have little use-value in themselves, but the circumstances of drug prohibition and widespread internet communication make them a useful means of exchanging value covertly and over long distances. The popularity of crypto's use corresponds roughly with their value, or the necessary average labor time to produce these currencies rises with popularity. As crypto becomes more valuable for its uses, standard fiat currencies are exchanged for coins in greater numbers. The value of the fiat currency is exchanged with the crypto's value, and each value exchanged is then averaged out across the value of the whole currency.
Worth mentioning, also, is that the DPRK is using cryptocurrency to bypass the embargo. I don't blame DPRK for doing what it has to survive under the thumb of capital.

The concept of finance is not new, it has been in existence since the earliest days of the exchange. Ethereum brought this to reality and a few years later, others saw this opportunity and started making use of it to build DeFi apps, which would later become more preferable to CeFi.

They can provide collateral in BTC and take their desired coin to trade; this can be paid back and their vested collateral closed/removed.
Conclusion

The Bitcoin Conspiracy (an enthusiast's perspective)

I keep coming across comments, especially in this sub, from people claiming that Bitcoin was created by the CIA or some government agency as part of the plan for the NWO and cashless society. I want to share my experience and try to clear up the confusion surrounding this topic.
I first got involved with Bitcoin in late 2016 when I heard about it and got some while at a libertarian festival. Back then it was still very popular among the agorist community and was being promoted as THE silver bullet that was going to disrupt the global fiat banking system.
Putting preconceptions aside, a new user might ask, "what's so special about Bitcoin? We already have digital currencies."
Well, you only need to read the first page of the whitepaper to discover what the original intent of Bitcoin was. It most definitely was not intended to be a tool for central banks to subjugate the world to a centralized global currency. Quite the opposite in fact. Read the full whitepaper here.
When I first learned about Bitcoin, it forced me to learn about economics, then the Federal Reserve, then one by one the dominoes fell and down the conspiracy rabbit hole I went. In 2017 (actually it started a few years earlier, but I wasn't paying attention back then) there was a very heated debate in the Bitcoin community regarding scaling.
I'll try to break it down simply:
In the very early days, when Bitcoin was just a project being worked on by a few very technical people, no one knew about it. All it took was a handful of people running the software on their laptops to mine new coins. Since there was not much computing power on the network, it meant there could easily be a spam attack where a malicious user could join the network and generate many gigabytes of spam transactions that would overload and crash the network. To prevent this, Satoshi implemented a limit of 1MB per block, to protect the network until there was enough computing power to be able to handle larger blocks.
This measure worked, and Bitcoin grew exponentially.
Satoshi vanished in 2010, after WikiLeaks attracted unwanted attention to the project by accepting Bitcoin donations. He left clear instructions for his successors that the 1MB block size limit was meant to be increased once the network could support high levels of user traffic. At the time, there still was not much use, so it wasn't until around 2014 that blocks started hitting the 1MB cap and all of a sudden users had to compete (by paying higher transaction fees) in order to get their transaction mined into the next block.
Up until then, sending a Bitcoin transaction would cost $0.0001 (hundredth of a penny) or less, no matter if you were sending $0.10 or $1,000,000. Now, since block space was limited, fees started to rise, as miners would only include the transactions with the highest fees. Over the next couple years, transaction fees went up dramatically, at times reaching as high as $100 to send a single transaction.
The solution was obvious - raise the block size limit.
But this led to a heated debate, and this is where the conspiracy became obvious to those who were paying attention. Since Bitcoin was decentralized and open source, anyone could contribute, but certain people controlled the commit access to the github repo, and it became apparent that those individuals had been compromised, as any and all mention of increasing the block size was met with fierce resistance.
There was a misinformation campaign to discredit anyone arguing for larger blocks. The argument was that larger blocks would mean users could not run the software on their low-power personal devices and laptops; that by increasing the block size it would lead to mining centralization. Well, if you read the whitepaper linked above, you'll see that Satoshi predicted this. He knew mining would eventually be left to "specialized server farms" while normal users could use what he termed Simplified Payment Verification (SPV) wallets.
But this point was consistently shot down in the community, and especially on /bitcoin. There was a MASSIVE censorship campaign in the bitcoin subreddit that continues to this day where anyone who questions the official narrative or even asks a basic technical question is immediately banned. /bitcoin today is nothing but a cesspit of price memes and misinformation. Go to /btc for the uncensored discussions (but beware of trolls).
In 2017 the debate was finally settled, sort of. Now known as "Bitcoin Core" (the name of the official Bitcoin software), the developers implemented a change known as SegWit (Segregated Witness) which fundamentally altered the way the software validates transactions. It was implemented as a "soft fork" rather than a "hard fork".
I'll explain the difference.
In a fork, the network comes to a consensus on new rules that all participants must follow. In a hard fork, the changes are non-backwards compatible, so all users must update their software or else be left behind on a dead network. Hard forks happen all the time in software development, but in the case of SegWit, the developers refused to make any non-backwards compatible changes for fear it might alienate users. Again, another unfounded fear. "We can't ever upgrade the technical capabilities of the network (such as the block size) because some people might not go along with it."
All kinds of mental gymnastics were performed to justify their refusal to increase the block size, and there was nothing anyone could do about it except fork as an independent project. The 1MB block limit is now essentially set in stone for BTC. So in August 2017, Bitcoin Cash (BCH) hard forked by increasing the block size limit to 8MB, along with some other changes.
Fast forward to December 2017 and Bitcoin was at its all time high of nearly $20,000. But fees were also astronomical and because of the 1MB block size limit, a huge backlog formed, and some people had to wait days or even weeks for their transaction to confirm. If anyone was trying to cash out into fiat and didn't want to pay a $100 transaction fee, by the time their transaction got confirmed the price had already crashed.
This event was largely responsible for the bear market of 2018. Everything that happened was predicted by those who knew what was going on.
A company called Blockstream had essentially wrestled control of Bitcoin from the original developers and shut them out or gained control over them, and started working on turning Bitcoin into a settlement layer for their product called Lightning Network.
LN is a complicated topic that I don't want to get into, but essentially it's a framework that recreates all the same problems inherent in the banking system that Bitcoin was meant to solve. Blockstream's goal is to profit from creating, and then "solving" those problems by charging users fees for all kinds of custodial services.
In my personal opinion, it's obvious that the original Bitcoin project has been hijacked and repurposed into a tool for the central banks. The propaganda is being pushed in some conspiracy circles that Bitcoin was created BY the central banks in order to discourage people from researching the true history. What is now commonly called "Bitcoin" is not the original project, but a Trojan horse.
The project that most closely follows the original design is Bitcoin Cash, and that is where almost all organic development is happening, and personally I feel that it's picking up steam lately as more people wake up to what's happening in the economy right now. Unfortunately most people are still unaware of how fundamentally broken BTC is now and so as new users run toward cryptocurrency to escape the dollar collapse, most will fall straight into the trap and be stuck with BTC that they won't be able to use without paying exorbitant fees and/or submitting to the very same tracking system they are trying to get away from.
This is a very deep rabbit hole but I think I've written enough for now. I hope this info helps people make sense of what's going on with Bitcoin. I know it's confusing enough even without so much deception taking place so hopefully this helps.
